West Charleston Corner Store |

West Charleston was a busy town in the early 1800's with many businesses, including sugar orchards, a grist mill, dressmakers, farms, blacksmiths, hotels, merchants, carpenters, teamsters, doctors, masons, a justice of the peace, constables, manufacturers of wagons and sleighs, shoemakers,a butcher, furniture shop, jeweler, saw mills, a photographer, and school teachers.
A daily stage went through West Charleston, taking passengers to railroad stations in nearby Barton and Island Pond. The town is much quieter now with just memories of life in another era.
There were four covered bridges in Charleston, which, sadly, are now gone.
The population of Charleston (which includes East and West) in 1882 was 1,204. Currently, in 2004, the population has dropped to just under 900.
The West Charelston Corner Store was built sometime in the early 1920's. It has had several owners throughout the years. At one point it was owned by a local Maple Syrup Producer. They also offered fresh cut meats which came from their own farm.
Jim and Sharon White have owned the store since May of 2003. They are the homeschooling parents of five children and work all together, as a family, running the business and enjoying socializing with local residents.
Spend some time on our front porch, visiting with summer residents and enjoying some soft serve maple ice cream.
Stop on the snowmobile trail in the winter and get some gas, hot coffee and perhaps a visit with some French speaking Canadians as they travel by.
Enjoy a hot meal from our take-out restaurant run by Jim and His brother, Bill.
Talk to our teenage daughters who wok in the afternoon and tell them stories from your area. We'd love to meet you! Hope you stop by our store for a visit!
We are located in the northeastern section of Vermont, near the Canadian border.
If you can't come to the area, try visiting our Website and get the latest news on our "Shopkeepers Journal," where you'll read store and family happenings from Sharon. You can even do a little shopping on our merchant pages or just view the latest additions to our history pages.
