Adamant Co-Op |
Nestled among the rolling hills of central Vermont, just 8 miles north of Montpelier, lies the village of Adamant. At the heart of this vibrant little community is the Adamant Cooperative Store--the "Co-op" where generations of locals have come for groceries and conversation ... and where we welcome you for a visit.

| Music on the New Porch: The Adamant Co-op built a new screened in porch which is accessible from the outside and overlooks the stream and gardens of the Adamant Music School. It was inaugurated at the 4th Annual Blackfly festival where local musicians took turns playing. |

The Adamant Co-op was incorporated in 1935 and started with an inventory of $200 worth of goods in a space rented from Minnie Horr. Minnie operated both the store and the post office from her house. In 1940 Minnie sold the building to the Co-op for $600 Electricity was added to the store, the gas pumps were installed and the building underwent some remodeling to open up the space.
Before granite was found in the surrounding hills, Adamant was called South Calais. The opening of quarries in 1880 brought changes to the village. Men from Scotland, Canada and other places, some with their families, and some alone, filled rooms of every house in the village, as well as a large boarding house up the road behind the Adamant Store towards the quarries. Over 100 men were employed at 14 different quarries.
In July 1893, when the first post office was established, the village was named Sodom. Marshall Bliss, the first postmaster, set up the post office in his store, where the church is now located. Not thinking the name Sodom was refined enough for the village, several townspeople managed to change the name to Adamant in 1905 - a name "as hard but not as wicked."
Today the Co-op is still run by Board of Directors. While we have three to four part time staff the Co-op depends largely on volunteers to work on weekends shifts, to pick up deliveries, do errands, stack wood, do recycling and many other little jobs.
